| On the first day of Ramadan, Hasan arrives at a railway station in the middle of the Anatolian wilderness. He has with him a young wife and a young daughter. He has heard that the small station community needs an imam to lead the prayer ritual and teach the children Koran during the holy month. Though a little put out by his unexpected and indeed uninvited appearance, the station folk have little choice but to put the man, his wife and child to stay in the cottage kept for the imam.
Before too long, realizing how aloof he is with his wife and daughter and through a series of events, the townspeople decide that for all his impassioned preaching, his mellifluous calls to prayer and committed worship, Hasan is essentially a cruel and heartless man and they start to develop an almost hostile attitude towards the imam. So during one sermon, having reached the end of his tether, Hasan Hoca tells a story. The community realises at once that this is the real-life story of the imam and Hacer. Hacer, it turns out, was taken advantage of, got pregnant, and dumped at a tender age and was facing a possible execution to clear her family’s name until Hasan stepped in to take her under his wings.
